Castle Visit in Albania

1 Day

Albania is filled with hilltop fortresses with incredible views over mountains or sea, many dating back to the Illyrian, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods — some still inhabited today.

Trip Overview

The Most Beautiful Castles
Castle of Gjirokastra
— The most spectacular in the country, a massive fortress dominating the UNESCO city of Gjirokastër. Highlights: Enormous ramparts, arms museum, American spy plane displayed in the courtyard, stunning views over the Drino Valley. Perfect for: history, photography, sunsets.
Berat Castle — Albania’s most unique castle because it is still inhabited. Inside you’ll find Ottoman houses, small Byzantine churches, cobblestone lanes, museums, and cafés. The panorama over “the city of a thousand windows” is magnificent.
Castle of Kruja — The castle of Albania’s national hero Skanderbeg, historically significant during resistance against the Ottomans. Features the Skanderbeg Museum, traditional old bazaar, and Ethnographic Museum. Also the easiest excursion from Tirana.
Rozafa Castle — The mythical fortress of Shkodër, surrounded by rivers and tied to the famous tragic Legend of Rozafa. Especially beautiful at sunset.
Lëkurësi Castle — The best castle for views over the Albanian Riviera, situated above Saranda with panoramas of the Ionian Sea, Corfu, and the southern coast. Very popular for sunset dining and drinks.
Himara Castle — An ancient fortified settlement above Himarë with an authentic, quiet atmosphere — old stone houses, empty alleyways, and stunning sea views. An excellent stop on a Riviera road trip.
Lezhë Castle — Panoramic ruins above Lezhë, linked to the history of Skanderbeg and the Albanian League. Less touristy but very pleasant.
Tirana Castle — A small urban castle transformed into a lively quarter with restaurants, cafés, and crafts. Not the most imposing fortress, but enjoyable for an evening out in Tirana.

Special Mention — Porto Palermo Castle
Built by Ali Pasha on a small peninsula beside turquoise water — probably Albania’s most cinematic castle. Easy to combine with Himarë, Qeparo, and the Albanian Riviera.
