About This Tour
If you want to explore Albania’s finest ancient ruins, here are the most impressive sites to include in your itinerary — spanning Greek cities, Roman amphitheaters, and forgotten Illyrian towns.
Trip Highlights
- Butrint National Archaeological Park The country's most famous ancient site, UNESCO-listed. You'll find a Greek theater, Roman baths, mosaics, ramparts, and a Byzantine basilica, all set within beautiful natural surroundings near Saranda. Arguably Albania's most spectacular archaeological site.
- Apollonia Archaeological Park An ancient Greek city founded in the 6th century BC, near Fier. The site is vast and peaceful, featuring ancient columns, an odeon, a Byzantine monastery, and magnificent views over the Albanian countryside.
- Durrës Amphitheatre A massive Roman amphitheater right in the center of Durrës, among the largest in the Balkans. Easy to visit even as a day trip from Tirana.
- Byllis Archaeological Park An ancient Illyrian city with a theater, paved streets, and an incredible panorama over the mountains. Far less touristy than Butrint.
- Antigonea Archaeological Park A city founded by Pyrrhus of Epirus. Very atmospheric hilltop ruins near Gjirokastër.
- Orikum Archaeological Park An ancient port city near Vlora with Roman ruins and views over the Adriatic Sea.
- Mosaic of Tirana A small ancient site in the heart of Tirana featuring early Christian mosaics. A quick visit if you're staying in the city.
